Get To Know... Gangbusters
I am…a firm believer in doing whatever you can to keep yourself happy. I don't keep clothes that don't fit, agonize over projects I don't care about, hang out with people I'm not comfortable around, or eat when I'm not hungry. And I try never to compare myself to anybody else. It seems to work.
I was…trying to be an illustrator for a while. I love to draw. But creative goals freak me out. That's true whether I'm working on someone else's project, like a big commissioned painting, or a long-term project of my own, like a children's book. So I have a big crate of sketchbooks at home, full of drawings that might make adorable kids' books, but you can't have a book with only one picture of a bunny. You have to draw that same bunny over and over again. Just talking about it is making me a little fidgety.
I will be…forever delighted every time I see someone wearing my jewelry out into the world. That just never gets old. I love seeing my prints in people's homes, too. I don't think it's vanity, because it's not about me, it's about the work and the fact that it's making someone happy. It's tough to explain. It's just nice.
Many people don’t know that I…know the words to "We Didn't Start the Fire." I couldn't get enough of that song for about a month when I was 12. I listened to the tape on my Walkman everywhere I went. I also had a huge crush on Jeff Goldblum in high school after we read Jurassic Park for class, so I guess I was just a weird kid.
Most nights, you can find me…far away from the computer. It's a big change, because up until a few years ago, I was always on the computer in my free time. In fact, got into graphic design originally as a hobby. Now it's a job, and I feel like eight hours of computer time is enough in a day. So I hang out at home with my boyfriend and make stuff with my hands—jewelry or crafts or food—or I go out.
I’d like to learn to…drive a stick shift, style my hair, run a business, talk to strangers, write great fiction, play a team sport, and mimic every accent in the world. Every one, even Welsh. Accents are The Coolest.
I can’t believe I…live in Atlanta. Growing up, I didn't have a very flattering picture of the South. My opinion of Georgia was more or less based on shows like "Designing Women" and "Green Acres." I thought I'd get here and be surrounded by easily-affronted women who faint at the drop of a hat, and coverall-clad men with a penchant for getting into wacky mix-ups. I was wrong. I like it here.
If I won the lottery, I would…get my mom and grandma a place here in Atlanta and pay someone to load them and all their stuff up into a truck. Apparently, and I don't know if you've heard anything about this, it's difficult to sell a house in South Florida right now.
I’d like to thank the Academy for…always giving lots of awards to Nick Park and Aardman. I know that's a literal answer, but it's true. Their work has always been an inspiration. Park has taken sort of an offbeat talent and focused it into making really unusual, fascinating things. So many brilliant minds at Aardman have gotten together and put thousands of hours of hard work and innovation into a field that strives only to achieve widespread joy. And they receive legitimate respect and recognition for it. It's nice to see evidence that it's possible to find success without folding yourself up to fit into existing niches.
And now for the giveaway! Kristina is graciously giving one lucky winner a choice of any item from her shop! To enter, leave a comment and let me know your favorite item(s) in her shop and what comic books or strips you enjoy now or did while growing up. You must leave your name and e-mail address to be entered. Any entries without both will not be put into the drawing. You have until Monday, Dec 7th to enter, and I will announce the winner on Tuesday.
For additional entries:
1. Become a fan of Gangbusters on Facebook, and write on her wall.
2. Twitter about this giveaway. Please have @juneshindesigns in the tweet so I can track it.
3. Become a June Shin facebook fan and say hi!

November Shows
Junktique was a show that I decided to do last minute. It was a fundraiser for a local elementary school which had live music, food and drinks, an artist market and a yard sale. The name threw off a lot of customers, as they thought it was only yard sale people. So that wasn't great for us artists, but I was in a room with crafty friends, so I was in good company.
Here is Kristina of Gangbusters. She makes really cool pendants and cuff links using vintage comics and resin. People just loved her stuff.
This is Kaz of Kazstyle, and she makes pouches and other goods using recycled kimonos and obis. So cool.
And here are some pics of soaps, candles and lotions from Love your Mama. Emilie's booth was next to me at the Inman Park Festival, which was awesome because her booth smells so good. I don't use bar soaps, but we did a trade and I chose the peppermint rosemary soy candle. I actually need to get some more.
So I have 2 more shows coming up, then I'll be done for the year. Can you believe the year is almost over?

Get to Know... Fabulously Broke in the City
I am ... a mid-20s money & style, eco-friendly blogger who got out of $60,000 of debt in 18 months. In my other life, I am a freelancing IT professional who has an awesome boyfriend who can cook like a chef, and organize our apartment like a demon.
Oktak Winner!
I'm so glad all of you loved this giveaway. I wish I could've entered, because I love Oktak's pouches. Anyway, in order to pick the winner this time, I used random.org. Indie Craft Experience!
Tuesday, November 17, 2009
Get to Know... Oktak
I am... a designer, crafter, businesswoman, wife & mom, displaced Tokyoite and an avid cat-lover.
I was... a typical "indoor" girl who loved all forms of art - painting, drawing, sewing, dancing, playing music. I remember being four years old and loving rainy days. I was mesmerized by the shapes of rain, and loved crafting as I listened to music.
I will be... focusing more and more on giving back as I grow older. What little I've achieved in life would amount to nothing if I did not give back to anyone.
One of my favorite quotes (this is from the film, "Monsieur Ibrahim"): "What you give is yours forever, what you keep is lost forever".
I am motivated by... beautiful colors and fun designs, and the happiness they bring!
Many people don't know that... I've played the piano since I was four and am pretty good at it!
Most days, you can find me... at home, working on a new project with a cup of tea.
I'd like to learn... Japanese calligraphy, to dress myself properly in a kimono, and take up French again.
I have never... traveled to South America or Australia - those are the only 2 continents I've never set foot on. I'd love to visit some day!
If I won the lottery, I would... buy an apartment here in New York! (We've been looking for several years!) It doesn't have to be lavish, and I'd give the rest away to my favorite charities.
I'd like to thank the Academy for... recognizing my work! It truly feels wonderful to know that other people enjoy what I make as much I enjoy making them. It makes everything worthwhile. Thank you June!!

Another Giveaway!
Tuesday, October 27, 2009
Get To Know... Lillyella
I was… a wild child, a rebel, a flutist, a pizza maker, a graphic designer for 10 years and a photographer for a magazine.
I will be… a faithful wife, a loving mother, a good daughter, a successful business owner and happy for the rest of my life.
My passion is…creating. and eating. but mostly creating. I can't function if more than a day goes by and I haven't created something. Doesn't matter much what it is these days, though I thrive best on variety and love finding new projects to get into and thing to try.
Many people don’t know that I… have five tattoos, love goats and can handle a shotgun like nobodys business. (don't worry, I only shoot paper and clay!)
I’d like to learn… blacksmithing and welding!
I can't believe that I... make jewelry for a living. seriously. I'm amazed and thankful every single day.
If I won the lottery, I would… buy a huge piece of land somewhere rural, get lots of goats, have an orchard, a huge garden, a turtle habitat, a gigantic workshop and I would make stuff all day long.
I’d like to thank the Academy for… my success, throughout my entire life. Maybe it was my dedication or maybe it was luck. There are times I can see how I got to where I am and there are times I can't believe I'm not dead.
