Happy 2009!!!

Every year I am surprised at how fast the year has past. I can't believe I've been blogging for almost a year now. It was slow going at first, but am happy to have befriended fellow bloggers and twitterers. So thank you all for reading and supporting my jewelry business, and have a fabulous NYE! But before I head out, if you haven't yet gotten your calendars for the new year, here are some recommendations from fellow Etsiers.

Happy New Year!

The Tea Rose

Lately, I've been on a reading frenzy, just wanting to find and read good books. I was at Barnes and Noble earlier this week, wandering the aisles to find a good book. Nothing on the best seller racks called to me, but I came upon The Tea Rose, by Jennifer Donnelly, on one of their tables. The heroine is Fiona Finnegan, a young girl who lives in East London during the time of Jack the Ripper. She has dreams of opening a shop with her childhood sweet heart, Joe Bristow, when tragedy befalls her and her family. She flees to New York, where she eventually becomes one of the wealthiest women through her successful tea business. However, unfinished personal business brings her back to London, where she has to confront her past.

Since most historical fiction books I've read take place during Tudor or Renassaince eras, it was really enjoyable to read about a different period and New York City. When Fiona first arrives in NYC, she finds her uncle who owns a grocery store in Chelsea, about a block from my old office. Obviously, Chelsea looks quite different from the late 1800s. Shoot, it looks pretty different from just 3 years ago, but I could totally picture the city in that time. Anyway, I recommend this book to those who like historical fiction, reading about strong, driven women, and like a touch of romance and suspense along the way. There is a sequal to the book, which I look forward to reading, called The Winter Rose.

What I want

Christmas has come and gone, and now I want to shop for myself. So here are a few things I found that would be fun to have.

OMG, these take me back! We used to have these mugs, and I can't believe they're "vintage" now. That makes me feel really old. At least they're not "antique." I found these at Three Potato Four, a really great online shop that I just discovered, filled with home decor, accessories, and a slew of fun stuff. Definitely check it out.

This is a money tree from Red Envelope for $59.95. According to their site, Feng Shui masters recommend having one in the home or office to invite good fortune. Who couldn't use some of that, especially now.Aren't these cupcake towels adorable? I found these at Wrapables and they are available for $9.95. I think I would just keep these in their packaging and never use them.

I haven't had time to do a lot of online window shopping, but I think I'll have to make it a regular event. Have a great weekend!

New Boots and Boutique - Eviva!

I've been wanting a new pair of boots, preferably more casual than the pointy toed ones I currently own. So I went over to Eviva, over in downtown Decatur. I was thinking that I wanted some motorcycle boots or something similar with low-heels, since I'm on my feet constantly, but I spotted these Fornarinas, and now they're a new addition to my collection.

So not only does Eviva have fabulous shoes, they are now also carrying June Shin jewelry! Do you need any more reasons to go there?

Thursday Team Feature - HautTotes

For this week's feature, I'd like to introduce you to Melissa, from HautTotes. She makes very cool totes using very cool fabric, and I took some time out to get to know her a little bit. She has been all around the world and has come full circle. You'll see what I mean.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and where you are from.
I was born on a sheep ranch in Nevada, and thought the town was terrible and boring. After graduation, I moved to NYC and then to San Francisco where I worked as a nanny for children with CP. I moved to Moscow, Russia in 1993 and stayed (as an illegal alien) for a year teaching English. After that I traveled though Turkey, Egypt and the middle east. I returned to the bay area in 1994 and met a man I had known in high school, we got married, graduated college, and ended up moving right back to the town I grew up in. Our property even shares a property line with the sheep ranch I grew up on. LOL I love it here now. We have 1.5 acres and I am currently a stay at home mom to our two children, 3 cats, 1 dog and a 135 gallon fish tank with 11 fish in it.

How long have you been making totes and how did you get started?
I started making totes when my 9 year old daughter, who uses a power wheelchair, wanted a "cool" bag for the side of her chair. I made her one with pink roses and skulls and pink faux fur trim. The rest is history.
According to your profile, you are well traveled and lived everywhere. Where was your favorite place to live?
I love where I live now, but as far as places I've traveled Turkey was my favorite. Just absolutely lovely people. New Zealand was the most beautiful and I recently spent a month in Ghana and met the nicest people in the whole world, but the humidity would kill me eventually.

What is your most recent Etsy purchase?
My most recent purchase was 30 yards of fabric. But, before that I bough doggie treats from a great shop featured on Sneak Attack*.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
What is this spare time you speak of?

What are your favorite foods?
Bangan ka Bhurta , it is an Indian dish made of eggplant.

What plans or aspirations do you have for your business?
For now I am hoping to average a bag a day. Next year when my youngest is in school a full day I hope to step things up!

Do you have other places online where we can find you? (twitter, flickr, blog, etc.) If so, please list them here.
I haven't even begun to think about all that. lol

Thanks Melissa! If you'd like to see more of what she has to offer, please do check out her shop.

And in case you were wondering:
*What's a Sneak Attack? Three days a week at an appointed time, an Etsy shop with few or no sales is announce on this site. As many people as possible then buy items from that shop, resulting in a frenzy of surprise business to the unsuspecting shop! Want to join in? Click here for more information.

Quote of the day

"Now how do skinny jeans become baggy jeans? That's an oxymoron right there."
While waiting in line at the post office, there was a really skinny guy wearing really skinny jeans, but was sagging in the ass. It was pretty funny.

I've read all about this tagging business, but never have been tagged before. Well, lovely Ashley from Hiking in Stilettos has tagged me, so you all get to learn a little more about me. So here goes:

10 years ago I got my first "real job" at a software company in Manhattan. The company just hired a whole bunch of newbies, so we were like the freshmen, but now we were earning money. When I wasn't working, I was out making new friends with co-workers at happy hours and partying in the clubs. Good times.
No Idea was a bar we frequented.

8 years ago I was living in my first post college apartment in Queens with a roommate. Now I could stay out later since I didn't have to worry about catching the last train back to my parents house on Long Island, and cabs were only $20 if I was really drunk. That apartment also happened to be down the street from my boyfriend's, which was purely coincidental, but lots of fun.

6 years ago I was still working at the same company but I moved back home to save money in aspirations of buying a place in the city. I didn't buy an apartment, but did buy my first car a year later.

I moved to Atlanta where my boyfriend was living. I started making jewelry while looking for a job, and ended up turning my hobby into a business. And so, here we are.

5 yummy things:
chocolate ice cream
mushroom ravioli in cream sauce
bul-go-gi (Korean marinated beef)
chicken tikka masala
red velvet cupcake with cream cheese frosting

5 places I would like to escape to:
Mexican Riviera

5 things I would never wear:
high heeled sneakers
Christmas sweaters

daisy dukes
mesh shirts

5 favorite tv shows:

No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain
Grey's Anatomy

5 things I enjoy doing:

making jewelry

5 favorite toys:
my new macbook
digital camera
Hmm, I'm not much of a toy person, so that's all I have.

5 people I'm tagging:
Love Yu

Thursday Etsy Feature - Midnightcoiler

A little while ago, I joined an Etsy team who are dedicated to promote each other by featuring the members in treasuries. So not only do I get featured in more treasuries, it makes it easier to find artists to blog about. Today, I want to introduce you to Lynn, from Midnightcoiler. She makes hand-carved gourds, basketry, pottery, nature crafts and organically grown & gathered naturals, and is also one of the team's administrators.

Designer Egg Gourds
Gourd Puzzle Box

Lynn has a passion for making art using materials that are gathered and grown from nature. She has actually started a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the use of gathered natural fibers in basketry and art. She grows her own gourds and they are all one of a kind. She has even won over 100 awards at various art and gourd shows. Go Lynn! So please check out her shop for some unique pieces of art.

Let me tell you a little about Nicole. She is super friendly, and in less than a year, has become a top jewelry seller on Etsy! I met her through twitter when I was having some graphic design woes. So not only did she help me with my newly designed stickers (I will post pictures later) but she also featured me on her blog. All I can say is that she is one of the nicest people in the world. Ozark Neckwarmer

You may or may not know, that I work part-time at the most fabulous yarn shop in the Southeast, Knitch. Thus, I have easy access to luxurious and fun yarns. Now that it's officially cold out, I start up with my knitting projects. Last year, I bought this awesome handspun yarn from Ozark Handspun, and has been it sitting in my yarn basket waiting to be knit. When I bought it, I didn't know what I wanted to knit, but just loved the colors and had to have it. Well, it is now a very warm neckwarmer that I knit for myself. I finished it in less than an hour and found a fun purple button to give it a nice pop of color.

It's so cozy and warm, and I absolutely love it. If I had the time, I would sell knitted accessories in addition to my jewelry, but, jewelry keeps me busy enough. So, do you likey?

Thursday Etsy Favorites - Brown Bunny by Iris

I've been slacking on my weekly Etsy favorites, but I'll try to be good and post regularly again. So it's back with this week's feature being Brown Bunny by Iris. Iris is a totally cool gal from Berlin who creates one of a kind hats. I don't have the writing talent to do her shop justice, so it'll have to be said with her pictures.

Don't you love the way her hats are modeled and photographed! She's a fabulous designer and overall cool chick!

Edit: Oops, I forgot that it's Friday, but I wrote this last night, so I'm all confused. But I'll keep the title as is. And as Shay said, Happy Friday!

Bowling at Home

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving weekend. I ate and drank enough to make me sleepy and lazy this weekend. A great way to spend a long weekend.

Yesterday, G and I went over to our friends' house for Sunday dinner of pizza and played a few games of Wii bowling. I had never played any Wii games, so I was really excited. The game definitely lived up to my expectation. It was so much fun! I'm sure most of you have played Wii by now, but if you haven't go buy one or find a friend who has one. This might become a regular Sunday night thing. :)

Next time, I'll try to snap some pictures of us actually bowling.

Drapey Leaves Necklace

Do you remember my first blog poll with the different leaf earrings? Well, I decided to take one of those designs and turn it into a necklace. I tested it out at the Chomp and Stomp show and it was a success! So many people admired it, and some even bought one! So it is now up for sale at my shop. The other thing I did was make it with different stones. So you can get it with carnelian (shown), garnet, iolite, peridot, or black spinel.

I'm really happy with the way it turned out.

Going to Athens

Georgia, not Greece. The Athens Indie Craftstravaganzaa is going on this Saturday, so my friend and I decided to take a road trip to check it out. I've never been to Athens and am looking for a good place to grab lunch and also good boutiques. So if you have suggestions, please let me know. Thanks!

Random thoughts

I never have to drive very far, so a tank of gas can last me up to 3 weeks. So today, I finally got a chance to fill up with a gas price that was under $2 a gallon. I can't remember the last time I've seen that. Well, I accidentally filled up with the Plus instead of the Regular. How did that happen? Well, you would think that the Regular and Supreme pumps would be on the ends with the middle grade being in the, well, middle. But no, the sneaky gas station owners put the Regular in the middle. I wasn't paying attention, so they got me! It was definitely a "duh" moment for me.

Here's a question for the toothbrush manufacturers. Why do you keep making the handles fatter and fatter so that they don't fit through the toothbrush holders in our bathrooms?

Don't you think it's ironic that soap can create scum, when it's the very thing that we use to clean scum?

Now that I'm taking a little break from my jewelry bench, I have all these random thought going through my brain. Thanks for listening. :)

Paper and Stitch

I am so excited to announce that I am included in the second online exhibition of Paper and Stitch! Please go check it out and tell everyone you know and maybe even show me a little love. The blog is also worth reading for fabulous indie finds. What's also great is that I am included with other artists that I love.

The exhibition is for month, so I will be adding new pieces as I have them ready.

I also have to mention that I'm included with some of my favorite artists, Phydeaux and Polarity. You have to check out their shops! :)

I have new ring colors and just in time for ICE! I was so excited, that I had to take a quick picture to show them off, even if the quality is not so great. If there are any left after tomorrow, I'll have them available in my shop, but if you'd like to reserve one for yourself, just send me an e-mail to june[at!] a great weekend!

This weekend...

Shows, shows, shows! That's what I'm all about this week. So what's coming up you ask? Well, let me tell you!

This Saturday is the Holiday ICE show, which has 100 indie artists from all over. I went last year as a shopper and had a ton of fun, so I am really excited to be participating as a vendor this year. My booth will be next to Wren, the talent behind Love Yu, and a little further down is my friend Alex, creator of Lil Sprout Knits. Come and shop and buy handmade! Plus, he first 300 customers get a fabulous swag bag full of goodies from each vendor.

The Paideia School is having their annual Art Visions sale to raise money for their arts programs. They will be selling wares from a host of artists including fine art, holiday gifts, stationery, jewelry, and much, much more. So be sure to swing by!

Tuesday, November 11, 2008

Production Mode

So the great thing about Saturday was that I sold a lot of jewelry. But that means I'll be up late to get ready for the 3 shows that are coming up, and it all needs to be made by this weekend. I didn't time this all very well, but I'm not complaining. It's a good problem to have.

I had a few of these necklaces at Chomp and Stomp and I sold out! Now I'm making them in a few more color options. Hope they do as well at the upcoming shows. If you see anything you like, just send me an e-mail at june [at!]
Happy Veteran's Day!

What a Day!

Chomp and Stomp was so great this year! I was a bit worried since they moved the artist market off the park and onto one of the side streets, but people found us and were happy to shop! AND, someone came into my booth and said that my pieces should be sold at Anthropologie. OMG, how awesome would it be if that actually happened, but what a great compliment!

Anyway, I brought my camera, but didn't have time to take pictures. I didn't even have much time to chat with the other artists. But, G was there with his fancy camera, so here's a little glimpse as to how many people came to enjoy the beautiful day and all the chili and beer.

In the morning when all the vendors were setting up.

Everyone is gunning for the chili which ran out in about 1 hour.

The AsianCajuns did come by my booth and bought these fabulous necklaces!

Thanks to everyone who came out! It was a blast!

And the winner is...

16" Short length

You all pretty much liked the short length the best. After looking at the pictures, I have to agree with everyone. Thank you guys for voting. This was a lot of fun. So the winner of a new pair of earrings is Chasity! She said she would like the eternity pearl earrings, so she will get them. She also has an etsy shop, so be sure to visit. Congratulations!I hope everyone has a great weekend, and be on the lookout for another contest next month.

Thursday, November 6, 2008

Come see me this weekend!

If you're in Atlanta, you have to come to Chomp and Stomp. It's a chili cook off where you get to sample chili from all these different restaurants around town. Plus there's music, beer and shopping! It's this Saturday starting at 10am. The chili runs out fast, so make sure you get there early! I'll be setting up shop there along with Love Yu and Sweet Honey Complex, so be sure to come out and say hi!

Meeting Tweeps

So I recently joined Twitter, after reading about it in the Etsy forums. Well, I have found a new addiction. It's been fun chatting and reading other tweets, and meeting cool new peeps! This past week, I met Xiane, who is a crafter extraordinaire! She spins yarn, makes bath and body products, pillows, mineral makeup, and is overall, a cool chick! What doesn't she make that I don't want?

Her mineral makeup is available at, and be sure to check out her blog!

And if you'd like, you can follow me on twitter.
